In The Media » Energy independence is vital - Jonathan Bullock MEP
To The Editor,
There is plenty to concern us over the news that Kilroot Power station near Carrickfergus in Northern Ireland is to close, with the loss of 240 jobs.
It had previously been scheduled to close in 2024, when, as in the rest of the UK, such power stations are to be phased out.
The problems in Northern Ireland may well be ones we face here, as our coal fired power stations close.
There is also the wider question of the status and security of Northern Ireland, if it is losing power plants and being made dependent on sites in the Republic.
And as we leave the EU, things can only be complicated by the loss of indigenous resources to those located within EU territory.
The whole affair looks like a real warning for us to take energy issues more seriously, and to recognise that energy independence is very important.
