In The Media » Jonathan Bullock MEP - I would like to add my voice to the call for a posthumous Military Cross to be awarded to Walter Tull
I would like to add my voice to the MPs who are calling for a posthumous Military Cross to be awarded to Walter Tull.
He was the first black officer in the British Army and one of the first black professional footballers, playing for Spurs and Northampton Town, while living in Rushden.
MPs are calling for him to be posthumously awarded the Military Cross and I wholeheartedly agree.
He was the first black commissioned officer in the British Army and the first black officer to lead troops into battle, despite military regulations at the time forbidding non-white soldiers becoming officers.
It is about time we honoured Walter Tull. We have come so far since the days he bravely fought in battle and we need to recognise his sterling military career and bravery.
