Recent events in France have starkly illustrated that the Government needs to be very careful in using 'stick' more than carrot, when it comes to altering people's energy and fuel usage.

The reason for the the protests which have shaken France in recent weeks is that so many people are suffering due to large price hikes in the price of petrol and diesel.

President Macron had ordered these changes in order to meet the requirements of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, better known as the Paris Climate Agreement.

US President Donald Trump was widely derided for pulling the United States out of this agreement, arguing it was a bad deal for America - Mr Macron is now discovering it was a bad deal for the French people.

We need to make sure we do not make the same mistakes in this country, and fuel prices are not increased by the Chancellor.
