In The Media » Jonathan Bullock MEP - Remember the real costs of smart meters
JONATHAN Bullock MEP has warned people to beware of the true costs of smart meters.
It has been revealed that organisations are being invited to apply for a share in £8.8m being offered by the Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy in exchange for new ideas for products and services using smart meter data (see notes).
This is aimed at reducing energy demand in small, non-domestic buildings including, shops, restaurants and schools.
But Mr Bullock, East Midlands MEP and UKIP's energy spokesman said: "I have to issue a word of warning on smart meters.
"The enormous costs involved won't be recovered through energy savings - the long-term plan is 'demand management'.
"When we all have smart appliances, the power companies will most likely charge us more at peak times.
"People need to understand when they are offered a smart meter the costs will come back one way or another."
