In The Media » Jonathan Bullock MEP - We must put a stop to ECHR riding roughshod over the courts of our land
A RECENT successful appeal to the European Court of Human Rights is yet another example of how our domestic courts are being undermined.
The ECHR allowed an appeal on human rights grounds after a woman was arrested under under counter terrorism legislation.
Now Jonathan Bullock, MEP for the East Midlands, said the practice of riding roughshod over our domestic courts has to stop.
He said: "Although the ECHR is not a formal part of the European Union, this recent case is a reminder of the extent to which international bodies now claim superiority over our domestic legal structures, even over our Supreme Court.
"For our own security, this needs to end. It cannot be right that cases are concluded in Britain, and then run for years, at public expense, overseas."
Mr Bullock also said that post-Brexit, the UK needed to have the mechanisms to review the status of certain EU citizens who may be a danger to the public.
He said: "Brexit is not an abstract concept, it is about taking back control - and few areas matter more than the security of our citizens."
