In The Media » Letter to the press - Jonathan Bullock - once we are free of the EU, exporters can finally be banned from selling live animals for slaughter
To The Editor,
Recent reports have spotlighted another plus to us leaving the European Union.
Once we are free of the EU, exporters can finally be banned from selling live animals for slaughter.
Every year we see thousands of animals shipped abroad to be slaughtered in what can only be described as sub-standard abattoirs.
These animals endure horrendous conditions on the journey before being killed.
Plans by the Government to end this practice are a clear example of where the ability to take our own decisions - this time in the field of animal welfare - can lead to a raising of standards.
Brexit is not about a race to the bottom - it is a race to the top.
Yours faithfully, Jonathan Bullock, MEP for the East Midlands
