BREXIT Party MEPs have reacted to the election of EU Commission presidential candidate Ursula Von Der Leyen, saying she may be the most hard-core EU-federalist president yet.
East Midlands MEPs Annunziata Rees-Mogg, Jonathan Bullock and Matthew Patten reacted with fury and dismay at this morning's speech and subsequent election.
Annunziata Rees-Mogg said: "This morning's speech was shocking - she has made it clear she will push for even more transfers of powers to the EU, from the EU defence force to an EU social policy.
"Her plans will equal more EU regulations and rules and further transfer of European taxpayers' money. She even wants to scrap EU member states having a veto on foreign policy, removing one of the very last threads of national parliaments' sovereignty.
"This is a clear attempt for the European Union to take control of every single aspect of our lives - this is not what the British people voted for her election will strengthen the case to leave the EU.
"She has won a one-horse race and it is not in Britain's interest to see her lead the Commission, which is why I did not rubber stamp her candidacy."
Mr Bullock said: "She has said she stands ready to support an extension to Article 50. We need to keep the pressure on to make sure this doesn't happen.
"The British people voted to leave the EU - we will be doing all in our power to make sure that happens on October 31."
Mr Patten added: "Her main theme was 'the world needs more Europe'. Well, not in East Midlands where people voted overwhelmingly for Brexit. Her election was a stitch-up and hardly democratic!"
